I am Here

I arrived in Chico yesterday after a nine hour drive from Salt Lake City. The entire trip was pretty uneventful except a couple days ago I was notified by my bank that a transaction on my card took place in Texas, when I was in Wyoming. That was annoying, and I had to finish the trip paying cash for gasoline--which you may know is also a pain because most places want you to prepay, and then you have to go back in and get your change.

I had plans to stay over in Winnemucca, but when I got there I deemed it 1.) unnecessary and b.) all the motels there were scary.

The air quality in this part of California is probably as bad as you thought. Hopefully it will improve pretty soon. It seems wrong to whine about this when there are other people who have lost everything due to the fires.

Here is the single picture I have taken in California so far. The GPS data in the EXIF says I was in Donner. I think it was a rest stop or a view location.

  1. Once upon a time I was stuck in Winemucca with my Dad and my brother for about 5 weeks from car trouble. Mom used to send us money from Oregon by US Postal in old cigar boxes filled with random stuff to disguise the real contents. We lived in a motel while waiting for our car engine to be rebuilt, destroyed, and rebuilt again.

It was summer. I was thirteen. I gambled in grocery stores when I could get away with it and we ate a lot of fast food. We stayed in a Motel 6 at the edge of town. It had a small swimming pool.

During our time there, there was a dust storm during the day and I watched as a wall of dust as tall as a skyscraper slowly made its way to our street and then it got dark as night and the dust stung my face and I went indoors.

During our time there, there was a hatch and a swarm of small flies, billions of them. After that came the frogs, for the bugs, and they died in the Motel 6 pool by the hundreds.

It was all biblical as fuck. Later in life, I moved to Nevada and considered and ultimately rejected Winemucca as a base, but not because of the plagues.

    Welcome back to the West.

  2. Welcome back! I’m in Dublin. It’s hot. Tomorrow I fly back to Long Beach.

  3. California. Yay. Glad you're back on the West Coast, best part of America. Bummer your card number was stolen. Texas. Imagine that.

Good ol' Winnemucca. There used to be a billboard about 30 miles north of town that read "Winnemucca - City of Paved Streets". That's saying a lot.

    Hilarious tale, Mr. Donut.
