Buildings

From left to right:
Waltower Building, Scarritt Building, Rialto Building.

Where I live has its own landscape. Not trees or mountains, but buildings. Kansas City must have been thriving in the Twenties and Thirties, because that seems to be about when all these big fancy buildings were erected. About half, or more, maybe, were banks. The building I live in (that's its east wall on the left edge of the picture) started out as the Fidelity Bank and Trust Building. It was built in 1933, the company went bust pretty quick, and the building sort of languished.

In 2005, some company converted our building into a 32 story apartment building with a penthouse and two towers. The Waltower building is now apartments, the Scarritt Building is soon to be apartments with some retail and commercial on floors 1 and 2. The Rialto Building, of late the Ozark Building, is being converted into a high-end Marriott hotel, with restaurant. No telling how long all of that will take. I know they're making a lot of noise. Lot of noise.

I'm still working on the courtyard there. I changed the way the wires ran for the lights, and I put up a couple more of those hanging basket things. (I don't want to do too much lest I defeat the whole purpose of living in an apartment instead of owning a home in the 'burbs.)

For this picture, the camera is facing north, and we do get some direct sunlight--just not all day. Like, I doubt I could grow tomatoes. Not real big ones, anyway.

That's my blog post.  Just didn't want to get rusty.

  1. Welp, here I am again, unable to stay signed in to my Google account once I leave my blogspot page. Don’t you just love the inconsistency of technology?

Anyway, I too appreciate apartment living, for the most part. I’ve been so lucky to have had nice, quiet neighbors too, and I never was into gardening. We’re on the third floor, so even the shrieks from the pool are muted. One thing that would make it even better would be a little balcony…

    2. Our apartment is a sort of compromise, regarding balconies and "downtown vistas." There is no vista, as you can see. We looked at a unit on the 16th floor, and it was fun looking out onto downtown, the river, the (small) downtown airport, and all that. Where we wound up is as the picture shows--no view, but the ability to go outside and sit in the sun, or even just go outside and see what the temperature and humidity feels like, or just how cold is it and how many jackets do we need, that's very nice.

  2. So that courtyard is all yours exclusively? (I've been wondering). I'll take outdoor space like that over city views any day. I'm on the 3rd floor with trees as my view - it's fabulous but I would still love a balcony as well. Apartments with both balconies and lush trees close enough to touch are available - we just didn't get one *sigh*

    1. It's all ours! There are three doors leading out to it. I think due to the original design of this building, the corner unit just had a lot of roof area next to it that was unsuitable for anything, and already had a high wall around it, so it's just bonus space, more or less. What makes it nice is there are plenty of outdoor electrical outlets and even a faucet making it easy to keep clean. The down side is, as you see, all there is to look at are the middle and tops of surrounding buildings. Luckily, they are 'historical" and kind of interesting.
