Consider that hot and cold are considered opposites, but how could you say 32 degrees is the opposite of 105 degrees? For on a scale that goes from the freezing point of water to the temperature of the surface of the sun, say, the range from 32 degrees to 105 degrees is but a very tiny segment of the range of all possible temperatures.
Let’s do I.Q.s. What is the opposite of “intelligent?” Well, that kind of depends on where you are on that scale. (I’ve said this before.) On a scale of 1-100, where a rock is 1 and God is 100, where is Albert Einstein? Where is Lennie in Of Mice and Men? Is it possible that Einstein is a 37.3, and Lennie and 37.1? Where are you?
And in the midst of all this, we are “divisive” and “polarized” because we have Republicans on one side, and Democrats on the other. Conservatives here, and then Liberals over here. The Rabid Right and the Looney Left. But these two ideologies are not opposites. Not if you consider what the actual range of governing ideologies of human societies is. You might come closer if you name Attila the Hun and, say, Denmark. Just guessing, here.
We need to knock this off and figure out what needs to be done here.

ReplyDeleteDemocrat and Republican politicians aren’t opposites, though it serves their purpose to have us believe it. I was fooled for decades to believe that Dems would secure women’s rights, but they haven’t done shit. They never fought for the ERA, cave repeatedly on abortion, and can’t get healthcare in general straightened out so poor women have access. Domestic violence is still rampant as is violence in general, which affects women disproportionately, since we have to live in fear. Sure, the Dems say they’ll fight for these things, but they don’t. They just keep asking for money and whining that they’re being obstructed by Reps. Well, maybe we need all new politicians who can stand up for these things and GET THEM
ReplyDeleteDONE!
Well said, yourself. Political discourse that concerns itself strictly with ideologies, or cultural differences, isn't going to go anywhere. Even with our "political" differences, wouldn't it be refreshing it the Democrats said, let's do this to ameliorate violence in our culture, and the Republicans said, yeah we need to do something, but why don't we do this instead? At least we'd all be recognizing and trying to fix the same problems.
